HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HOME FROM WATER DAMAGE

    1. Avoid using carpet in areas that could be damaged from water from within or from the outside.
    2. Use “drain guards” to prevent drains and pipes from being blocked by hair.
    3. Replace faulty sump pumps to prevent water damage. Make sure you check them regularly.
    4. Use caulking or door guards to prevent windows or doors from letting water seep in causing unnecessary damage.
    5. You should avoid chemical drain cleaners if a drain seems clogged. It is better to use a plunger or a bent wire to help clear the blockage.
    6. You should keep bathrooms clean and dry to prevent mold build up. Replace leaking faucets and use mold retardant products. Open bathroom windows on sunny days, from time to time, to permit air to circulate.
    7. In freezing weather you should let water trickle from faucets inside and out to prevent pipes from bursting. You don’t want a costly repair from bursting pipes, which can cause significant damage.
    8. Check appliances regularly, especially refrigerators, dishwashers and washing machines, to prevent leaks that can damage the appliance and also walls and floors.
